How wallet passes eliminate check-in fraud

Screenshots and shared barcodes make a single membership easy to pass around. A device-bound wallet pass closes that loophole — and ties access to live membership status.

Guide · Security · Non-transferable passes

Most gym check-in fraud isn't dramatic. It's a member forwarding their barcode to a friend, a screenshot making the rounds, or a lapsed member still getting in on an old credential. Each one is a quiet revenue leak — a paid experience being used by people who aren't paying.

Why static credentials leak

A printed barcode, a keytag number, or a screenshot of an app barcode all share the same weakness: they're static and copyable. A screenshot is just an image — anyone can text it to anyone, and a scanner at the door can't tell whose it is. The credential has no idea which person is holding it, or whether their membership is even active.

How a wallet pass closes the loophole

The effect is that one membership means one member. Sharing stops being trivial, and access lines up with who's actually paying.

Zero
pass-sharing fraud reported by Anatomy since rollout
Device-bound
each pass presents only from its owner's phone
Live status
lapsed memberships lose access automatically

For an operator, that's the difference between a credential that hopes people are honest and one that's built so sharing doesn't work in the first place. Anatomy has seen no pass-sharing fraud since moving to VRSE Pass.

Frequently asked questions

Can a wallet pass be screenshotted and shared?
A screenshot of a wallet pass is just a static image and won't work like the real pass. The live pass is provisioned to the member's own device; NFC tap-in in particular can't be reproduced by an image, which closes the sharing loophole.
What actually stops one membership from being shared?
The pass is bound to the member's device and, when connected to your management system, tied to live membership status. Someone else can't present it, and a lapsed member's pass stops working automatically.
Does the pass know when a membership expires?
Yes. Because VRSE Pass syncs with your member records, a pass expires when the membership lapses — so an old pass can't get someone in.
Does this work on both Apple and Google?
Yes — the device-bound protections apply in both Apple Wallet and Google Wallet.
